Here is what I think. The first two felt highly honoured to be treated like slaves because they didn't bring enough dowry with them. The one from the city wasn't prepared to put up with his nonsense because her parents made sure to send her off with plenty of expensive goodies such as, a big foreign car, a giant size television, expensive kitchen gadgets like dishwasher, microwave and dough mixer (for their effing chapaties). After all, this is why they hate having daughters don't they?They are seen as a huge economic liability, isn't it? If they had any sense, they would be spending borrowed/saved money for their daughters' dowry, towards educating them which will provide them with freedom and an opportunity to stand on their own two feet.
